FLEDGLING
FLEDGLING
Written and Directed by Lily Hayman
Adapted from the novel ‘The Flight of Birds’ by Joshua Lobb
First performed at the University of Wollongong as a Creative Arts Honours (Theatre) major project, Fledgling was then further developed as part of the MerrigongX 2020 and 2021 ‘Reboot’ programs where it enjoyed a Sold Out Season in March 2021. It has since debuted in Sydney, in March 2022 at KXT as the final season of the Panimo Pandemonium Festival.
Fledgling is a story of grief and climate change told across time. It follows the relationship between a father and his daughter, and illustrates the ways that families become units of transmission for many things; trauma, laughter, stories. Fledgling shows us the impact we can have on each other, but also asks us what impact we are leaving behind on our planet.
REVIEWS
“A raw but exquisite piece of theatre-making that explores the limits of language and how both wisdom and trauma persist across generations” - Sydney Morning Herald
“A deeply emotional, intellectually provocative, and aesthetically satisfying experience” - South Sydney Herald
“Fledgling is a play I would love to see again. It’s a new Australian work with real promise – it should be printed, sold, studied and performed again and again. A fantastic production and an enjoyable night at the theatre.” - Theatre Travels
